DC Councilmember Pinto Urges Governors-Elect to Withdraw National Guard Troops on Day One

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Washington DC · GSM News

WASHINGTON, D.C. — District of Columbia Councilmember Brooke Pinto chaired a hearing on Thursday, November 5, renewing her call to end the National Guard deployment in Washington and urging newly elected Democratic governors to withdraw their states' troops on their first day in office.

Democrats flipped five governorships in the November 3 midterm elections, and the incoming governors must decide whether their states' National Guard troops will remain stationed in the District.

President Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington in August 2025, and 3,097 service members are currently on duty in the District. The Congressional Budget Office wrote to Congress in January estimating the deployment costs $55 million per month, with the mission planned to run through Inauguration Day 2029.

Congressman-elect Robert White, the District's incoming delegate to Congress, testified at the hearing. Pinto also used the hearing to introduce three bills strengthening police accountability.
