Rice University Breaks Ground on the Arc Building in Houston's Ion District, Nearly 200,000 Square Feet Due in 2028

Houston, Texas — Rice University broke ground on November 6 on the Arc building in the Ion District. The nearly 200,000-square-foot, seven-story research and corporate innovation building sits in Houston's Ion innovation district, shares a plaza with the Ion building, and Rice will be its anchor tenant, occupying about 80,000 square feet, or roughly 40 percent.
The building will provide flexible laboratory and office space for Rice and other institutions, allowing researchers to work closely with companies, startups, investors and top talent to turn research discoveries into practical applications.
The project is being developed by Rice Real Estate Company, is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028, and is now open for pre-leasing. The groundbreaking follows Rice's announcement of a university-wide artificial intelligence initiative that will recruit 75 interdisciplinary scholars and expand related courses and degree programs.
