Follow-Up: Bay Area Regional Transit Measure Passes in All Five Counties; 14-Year Tax to Raise About $980 Million a Year

SAN FRANCISCO — The Regional Transit Measure approved by San Francisco Bay Area voters on November 3 was confirmed passed on November 6, with majorities in favor in all five counties and roughly six in ten voters supporting it region-wide. Bay Area transit agencies including BART, Caltrain, Muni and AC Transit will thereby avoid deep service cuts and station closures.
The measure imposes a 0.5% sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a 1% sales tax in San Francisco County for 14 years, raising about $980 million a year.
San Francisco voters also approved Proposition H with 73.6% support, a 15-year parcel tax raising $177 million a year for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. By county, San Francisco recorded the highest approval: of 239,995 votes counted, 188,528 — 78.55% — were in favor. San Francisco's current sales tax rate is 8.625% and will rise to 9.625% once the new tax takes effect.
