Follow-Up: Four in California Chinese Family Massage-Parlor Case Sentenced; Ringleader Gets 14 Years, 8 Months

VENTURA, Calif. — The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced on November 4 that four members of a family-run illicit massage business have been sentenced to state prison, ChineseInLA reported on the evening of November 5. Xiangwei Ma, 56, the ringleader, was sentenced to 14 years and 8 months; her younger brother Xiangdong Ma, 54, received 10 years; her older sister Li Ma, 60, received 5 years and 4 months; and her husband Ming Ma, 61, received 4 years and 4 months. A fifth defendant, Jaime Calderon, Li Ma's husband, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to county jail.
A jury previously convicted the four of multiple felonies: Xiangwei Ma of pimping, mortgage fraud and nine counts of money laundering; Xiangdong Ma of pimping and five counts of money laundering; Li Ma of pimping and one count of money laundering; and Ming Ma of pimping and two counts of money laundering. The court also forfeited the defendants' interest in more than $1.25 million in seized cash, bank funds and life insurance cash value.
The investigation began in 2020, when multiple law enforcement agencies received an anonymous letter reporting suspected prostitution and human trafficking at Ventura County massage businesses, including Miracle Massage in Ventura and A+ Massage in Port Hueneme. Investigators determined the family had operated commercial sex businesses behind the massage storefronts for more than a decade, recruiting and exploiting women from China and laundering the proceeds through financial institutions, life insurance, casinos and real estate transactions. Xiangwei Ma had previously pleaded guilty in Los Angeles County to attempted pandering and served 18 months. District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said the complex money-laundering investigation allowed prosecutors to seize the criminal assets and permanently shut down the businesses.
