High Surf Advisory for Oregon Coast This Weekend: Breakers Up to 28 Feet, Beach Hazards Statement Through Late Saturday Night

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Portland updated its coastal alerts at 12:57 p.m. PST on November 6: a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through late Saturday night for the North and Central Coast of Oregon and the South Washington Coast, with sneaker waves possible on the beaches. A High Surf Advisory follows from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST on Sunday, bringing large waves, hazardous surf conditions and sneaker waves, with breakers up to 28 feet.

The Weather Service said destructive waves may wash over beaches, jetties and other structures unexpectedly, and people can be swept off rocks and jetties and drown while observing high surf. Minor beach erosion may damage coastal properties and buildings. Because of sneaker waves, higher than normal water run-up is expected on beaches and low-lying shoreline; sneaker waves can suddenly knock people off their feet and quickly pull them into the frigid ocean, which may lead to serious injury or drowning.

The Weather Service urged caution in or near the water, especially for people razor clamming. Children and pets should be kept away from the surf zone, and people should keep off jetties, rocks and logs near the surf zone. Anyone who sees a person swept into the sea should not swim in after them, but call 911 and keep an eye on them until help arrives. A High Surf Advisory means high surf will affect beaches, producing rip currents, sneaker waves and beach erosion; people should stay well back from the water's edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves, and keep away from large logs on the beach, which water running up the beach can easily lift or roll, injuring or killing anyone caught in their path.

The NWS office in Medford issued a similar Beach Hazards Statement for the South Central Oregon Coast and Curry County Coast, in effect until 10 p.m. Friday, along with a High Surf Advisory for Sunday, with large breaking waves of 22 to 27 feet and an elevated risk of sneaker waves.
