DHS Condemns New York Sanctuary Release of Illegal Alien Convicted of Robbery and Assault

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement on November 6 condemning sanctuary politicians in New York after they released an illegal alien whose criminal history includes robbery, assault, and other violent crimes; he currently remains at-large.
On October 30, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer asking officials in New York City to not release from jail Alonzo Reyes-Garcia, who goes by the alias "Alberto Tellez" and is an illegal alien from Mexico. His criminal history includes convictions for third-degree robbery, third-degree assault: recklessly causing physical injury, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon: firearm/weapon, second-degree criminal contempt: disobeying court, second-degree aggravated harassment: causing physical injury to a family member, and disorderly conduct.
Despite his violent criminal history, New York sanctuary politicians refused to honor the detainer and released him back onto the streets without informing ICE. "Sanctuary politicians in New York refused to honor ICE's detainer and released this illegal alien back onto the streets, despite his criminal convictions for robbery, assault, and other violent crimes," said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. "American public servants should be dedicated to protecting American citizens, but these heartless sanctuary politicians are sacrificing safety for political power as they prioritize illegal aliens over hardworking Americans. The Trump Administration will always put the American people first, and we will never stop targeting, arresting, and removing illegal aliens in order to make America safe again."
Reyes-Garcia first illegally entered the United States at an unknown date and location, and was deported after an Immigration Judge issued him a final order of removal on October 31, 2006. He then illegally re-entered the country — a felony — at an unknown date and location. DHS asks anyone with information that could lead to his arrest to call the ICE tipline at (866) 347-2423.
In the statement, DHS also said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an Executive Order turning New York City into a shield for violent criminal illegal aliens; that in December 2025, then-Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons sent a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with the attorneys general of California and Illinois, putting her on notice for the state's failure to honor ICE detainers; and that Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law in May 2026, effective August 25, 2026, legislation barring local police departments from partnering and cooperating with ICE. The statement also listed other recent illegal alien crimes in New York.
