LA General CEO Jorge Orozco Honored for Partnership Supporting Survivors of Violence

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services announced on November 6 that Jorge Orozco, Chief Executive Officer of LA General Medical Center, was honored at the East Los Angeles Women's Center's (ELAWC) 50th Anniversary Mujeres de Paz Gala on October 30, recognizing his leadership in advancing a partnership that supports survivors of violence. LA General is in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
The recognition highlights a longstanding partnership between LA General and ELAWC. Through the collaboration, ELAWC operates services on the LA General campus, including a confidential emergency shelter through its Hospital Emergency Accompaniment Response Team (HEART), offering survivors of domestic and interpersonal violence a safe, temporary place to stay following hospital discharge, while connecting them with counseling, advocacy and other resources.
The county said the integrated approach has previously been described by LA General as a first-of-its-kind coordinated domestic violence response model, recognizing that medical treatment alone may not address the immediate safety and recovery needs of people experiencing violence.
"Jorge Orozco has been an important partner in helping the East Los Angeles Women's Center strengthen and expand our presence at LA General," said Barbara Kappos, Executive Director of ELAWC. "His leadership has helped create an environment where healthcare and survivor advocacy work together, allowing us to reach individuals and families at some of their most vulnerable moments."
"When someone comes to LA General after experiencing violence, our responsibility cannot end when their medical treatment is complete," said Orozco. "They deserve a safe place to turn, people who will stand beside them, and a pathway toward healing. I am deeply honored to receive this recognition."
The relationship between LA General and ELAWC spans several decades and includes hospital-based crisis intervention, advocacy, emergency shelter and education for healthcare professionals. Founded in 1976, ELAWC has spent five decades providing services to survivors and families throughout Los Angeles. Other honorees at the celebration included Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis; Maria Lemus, Founding Executive Director of Visión y Compromiso; and Zoila D. Escobar, President of the AltaMed Foundation.
