Michigan Awards $135 Million to Expand Out-of-School Learning at 1,171 Sites in 73 Counties

Michigan's Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) announced on November 6 that it is awarding $135 million to expand out-of-school time learning programmes statewide for students in kindergarten through grade 12. In the 2026-27 grant cycle, MiLEAP made 343 subawards supporting 1,171 before-school, after-school and summer learning sites, including 98 new subawards, covering 73 of Michigan's 83 counties, up from 68 in the previous cycle.
The funding comes from Section 32n of the State School Aid Act, with budget authority provided by 2026 Michigan Public Act 25, signed by the governor on July 21. Out-of-school time programmes give students safe, structured tutoring, physical activity and enrichment outside class hours, aiming to close gaps in learning opportunities. MiLEAP said the full list of funded organisations is posted on the programme's website, and local programmes will begin enrolment on schedule.
