Japan's Cabinet Extends Sinai Peace Cooperation Dispatch by One Year: Self-Defense Force Staff Officers to Serve With the Multinational Force and Observers Until November 2027

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on November 6 that the Government of Japan decided at a cabinet meeting that day to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in the Sinai Peninsula, extending the dispatch period by one year, until November 30, 2027.

Japan has dispatched Japan Ground Self-Defense Force personnel to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) since April 2019. Four staff officers are currently serving at the MFO Headquarters in Sharm El Sheikh, in the southern part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, in charge of liaison and coordination with Egypt and Israel concerning the implementation of the MFO's ceasefire monitoring activities, and engineering support at the headquarters.

The Japanese government said the dispatch of staff officers to the MFO contributes to the peace and stability of the Middle East, which is the foundation of Japan's peace and prosperity, promotes collaboration with other contributing countries, and provides opportunities for human resource development. Under the International Peace Cooperation Law, the revision and the status of implementation before it will be reported to the Diet.

The MFO is an international organization established based on the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty of 1979 and its Protocol of 1981. Since 1982, it has been conducting ceasefire monitoring activities and supporting the promotion of dialogue and confidence-building.
