Ten Foreign Ministries Issue Joint Statement on Joshua Wong's 10-Year Sentence, Calling for an End to National Security Law Prosecutions for Political Expression

The foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States issued a joint statement on November 6 on the sentencing of Joshua Wong, who received 10 years' imprisonment following a further charge under the National Security Law. The statement was published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on the UK government website.
The statement said Wong's sentencing came just months after leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance were convicted under the same legislation, and that these were further examples of how the National Security Law is being used to target individuals for political expression and participation.
The ten foreign ministries called for an immediate end to all unjust prosecutions of individuals charged under the National Security Law, and urged the authorities in China and Hong Kong to uphold their international commitments and honour the rights and freedoms guaranteed to the people of Hong Kong under the Sino-British Joint Declaration (1984).
The main sentence in Wong's case was handed down by Hong Kong's High Court on November 5: after pleading guilty to colluding with foreign forces, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This report follows the international response to that sentence.
