National Archives Hosts Online Forum November 10: Agency Experts Explain How to Find Veterans' Records

The National Archives will host an online forum, 'Accessing Veterans' Records: A Multi-Agency Forum,' on November 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Hosted by the Archives' Office of Government Information Services (OGIS), it will be livestreamed free on the National Archives' YouTube channel.
Experts from several federal agencies will explain, agency by agency, which veterans' and service members' records each one holds, how the public can request them, and the most common misconceptions in the process. Confirmed speakers include Virginia E. Burke, the Department of War's FOIA chief, and representatives of the National Personnel Records Center, which holds tens of millions of military personnel files and is the office veterans and their families most often deal with when seeking service records.
Veterans' records are needed for benefits claims, replacement service documents and family-history research, but they are scattered among the Archives, the records center and the individual services, and many applicants lose time by asking the wrong agency. Held on the eve of Veterans Day, the forum aims to map out those divisions of custody in one session. (Source: National Archives and Records Administration)
