National Air and Space Museum Opens 'Modern Military Aviation' Gallery on November 11, Capping Seven-Year Transformation

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum has announced that its final major new gallery at the flagship building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., 'Modern Military Aviation,' will open on Veterans Day, November 11. The gallery is the capstone of the museum's seven-year transformation; another new gallery, 'At Home in Space,' opened earlier on October 30.
The new gallery displays more than 150 artifacts spanning nearly 80 years of military aviation since the end of World War II, curated by Michael Hankins. Highlights include an MQ-1 Predator, one of the first three to be weaponized; a UH-1H Huey helicopter, an icon of the Vietnam era; an F-86 Sabre fighter; a Gulf War target map drawn in 1990 by Gen. David Deptula; and a model of the F-117 stealth attack aircraft.
The museum is located at 650 Jefferson Drive SW in Washington, D.C., open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, but timed-entry passes must be reserved online in advance. With a Veterans Day opening expected to draw crowds, the museum recommends booking passes ahead of time. (Source: Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum)
