Alabama Designates November 5–11 as Veterans Week, Honoring More Than 400,000 Veterans

Alabama, in the southeastern United States, has its capital in the city of Montgomery, Montgomery County. Governor Kay Ivey has issued a proclamation designating November 5–11 as Veterans Week in Alabama, honoring the service and sacrifice of the state’s military members in the week of Veterans Day, November 11.

According to the governor’s office, Alabama is home to more than 400,000 veterans, who make up a significant share of communities across the state. The proclamation covers service members of every era and every branch of the armed forces.

Veterans Day, observed on November 11, grew out of the World War I armistice commemoration and is now the federal holiday on which the nation thanks its veterans; schools, government agencies and community groups typically hold ceremonies and observances. A state-level Veterans Week proclamation extends that recognition across a full week.

The governor’s office says the state will continue to serve veterans and their families, including help with benefits claims and employment, through agencies such as the state department of veterans affairs. (Source: Office of the Governor of Alabama)
