The Met Names Spring 2027 Costume Exhibition “extraORDINARY,” With the Gala Set for May 3

The Metropolitan Museum of Art stands on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York County, New York. On November 5 the museum announced that the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition will be “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” — a show whose stars are not gowns but jeans, T-shirts and puffer coats. The accompanying Met Gala benefit will take place on Monday, May 3, 2027; the exhibition opens to the public on May 9, 2027, and runs through January 9, 2028, at The Met Fifth Avenue.
The museum says the exhibition will bring together some 200 to 230 pieces, curated by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben. It is organized in two main sections: “Familiar Forms,” grouping archetypal garments such as biker jackets, trench coats and puffers by type, and “Common Matter,” which turns to materials, showing how designers transform paper, plastic and aluminum into wearable work.
The opening gallery features Jun Takahashi’s fall/winter 2024–25 Undercover collection “Watching a Working Woman,” inspired in part by Wim Wenders’s film Perfect Days. Other highlights include a 1992 Comme des Garçons dress by Rei Kawakubo and pieces by Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang and Issey Miyake. Bolton says the show asks visitors “to see the everyday anew.”
The exhibition replaces the previously planned retrospective “John Galliano: Horizons,” which the museum and the designer jointly canceled in August. The exhibition and gala are made possible by Instagram, with major funding from Moncler and additional support from Condé Nast. (Source: The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
