Saturday, November 7, 2026 · California · GSM News

In California, a new institute that brings together artificial intelligence, technology and public health launched this week. Renaissance Philanthropy announced on November 4 the launch of the Public Health Network Information eXchange Innovation Institute (PHNIX II), with the California Department of Public Health as a partner. Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer, said in the announcement that the institute "brings together the best science, the best tools and the best minds to advance public health."

The institute will work with health departments, health systems and payors, researchers, technology companies, community-based organizations and local communities to test solutions in real-world settings, turning California's strengths in AI, technology, public health, health care and research into results used in everyday practice. Early priorities include helping more people get curative treatment for hepatitis C, preventing vaccine-preventable diseases, and turning data into earlier action against emerging health threats.

The institute will be led by founding director Dr. Debra Houry, an emergency physician and former Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Founding partners include the California Health Care Foundation and Blue Shield of California. PHNIX II will be incubated at Renaissance Philanthropy, whose CEO Tom Kalil served in science and technology leadership roles in two White House administrations.
