San Diego County Warrior Hike Challenge Set for November 7: Three Levels up El Cajon Mountain Honor the Military

The Warrior Hike Challenge returns to El Capitan County Preserve in Lakeside, San Diego County, California, on Saturday, November 7, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road. The challenge is a climb of El Cajon Mountain, described as arguably the toughest hike in San Diego County.
The hike is broken into three levels to match different abilities. Celebration Stations sit at the 1-mile and 3-mile turnaround points, while the strongest hikers push on to the summit, about 11 miles roundtrip. Launched in 2015, the challenges take place twice a year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day weekends, and were designed to honor active and retired military personnel and make the mountain more approachable to their families and friends.
The event is free with no RSVP needed, open to all ages and to dogs on leash. The County Department of Parks and Recreation advises attendees to bring at least one gallon of water, sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen and a walking stick or poles. The preserve covers 2,619 acres with roughly 8 miles of trails and a viewpoint overlooking three reservoirs. Information: [email protected].
