Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Travel · GSM News

The Metropolitan Museum of Art opens A Long Shadow: Postwar Japan Through the Lens on November 12 in Gallery 851 at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York, running through May 2, 2027. It is the Met's first exhibition of Japanese photography since 1995.

The show gathers more than 80 works by 15 artists, centered on five photographers, Tomatsu Shomei, Ishikawa Mao, Ishiuchi Miyako, Tokiwa Toyoko and Yamashiro Chikako, whose subjects include Okinawa and the base towns of postwar Japan. Drawn from the Met's collection, it includes rare photobooks and more than 30 recent acquisitions, and is free with museum admission (adults $30, children 12 and under free).

These artists began making pictures in the shadow of the war, documenting, questioning and reshaping the social fabric of postwar Japan. The museum is closed Wednesdays, Thanksgiving Day, December 25 and January 1.
