Follow-up: Musk Says Cybertruck Backlog Far Exceeds Output, With an Extra Shift Planned Before the Line Is Dismantled Next June/July

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said in a post on X on Saturday, November 7, that the backlog of orders for the Cybertruck electric pickup is "far more than Tesla can make before dismantling the line," and that Tesla will add an extra production shift to complete as many outstanding orders as possible before the line is taken down. The dismantling, planned for around June to July next year, is to make room for expanded production of the Cybercab robotaxi.

"The Cybertruck order backlog is currently far more than Tesla can make before dismantling the line for Cybercab expansion around June/July next year," Musk wrote. Reuters reported the post the same day, saying Tesla would add a shift to try to complete outstanding orders. Musk did not say when the extra shift would run or how many workers it would involve, and Tesla has not issued a formal production-schedule announcement; the plan was announced in Musk's post on X.

The statement came just a day after the wind-down announcement. On November 6, Musk posted that Tesla would wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027 to make room for increased Cybercab production; the Texas plant is the model's only factory worldwide. The new post narrows the wind-down timing to June/July next year and discloses for the first time that the order backlog exceeds the line's remaining capacity, requiring an extra shift.

Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck's lead engineer, said on November 6 that the truck "was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab," and that Tesla would maintain parts supply and service support. As of publication, Tesla had not provided further details on the extra shift or the dismantling schedule. (Source: Elon Musk)
