Mann Defeats Kobach to Become Kansas Attorney General by About One Point

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Associated Press confirmed on the evening of Nov. 6 that Democrat Chris Mann defeated incumbent Republican Kris Kobach in the race for Kansas attorney general. Mann won by roughly one percentage point, a margin of about 13,000 votes. The race was a rematch of 2022, when Mann lost by about one point; his victory makes him Kansas's first Democratic attorney general since 2011, and he takes office next January.

Mann, a former police officer and Wyandotte County prosecutor, campaigned on supporting local law enforcement, protecting consumers and keeping the attorney general's office out of partisan politics. He declared victory in the early hours of Nov. 4, but Kobach did not concede at the time, and the AP did not confirm the result until the evening of Nov. 6. Kobach has served as attorney general since January 2023 and is nationally known for hard-line positions on immigration and election security.

The result was one of several Kansas Democratic victories in this midterm election, with Democrats also leading in the governor's and U.S. Senate races. The Secretary of State's office has begun its routine close-race audit procedures to review contests decided by narrow margins.
