Follow-Up: EU May Borrow Over 40 Billion Euros More for Ukraine, German Media Calculate, Taking Total Support Past 200 Billion Euros

BRUSSELS — Germany's Welt am Sonntag reported on November 7, citing its own calculations based on European Commission data, that the European Union will likely have to take on more than 40 billion euros in new joint borrowing to keep financing Ukraine, and that total European support for Kyiv, including those loans, may exceed 200 billion euros.
Ukraine has requested another 70 billion euros in financial assistance for the next year, the report said; under current plans, the European Union is to provide 46 billion euros of that amount. Brussels expects to obtain part of the funds through revenues from frozen Russian assets.
Further financing for Ukraine will be discussed next week by EU representatives and member states, including heads of state and government, according to the report.
