The Thanksgiving tour of the large-scale AI gospel biographical film "John Sung" comes to Irvine, Orange County, California, on Sunday, November 22, with a screening at the Irvine branch of Harvest Chinese Christian Church. Shi Wei, the film's screenwriter and producer, will attend in person to share and meet the audience in person.
The day's schedule: a Sunday worship service at 4:00 p.m., followed by the film at 6:30 p.m., at the Irvine branch of Harvest Chinese Christian Church, 15 Orange Tree, Irvine, CA 92618. Registration is available by scanning the QR code on the organizer's poster.
"John Sung" is produced by the International Spiritual Literature and Art Center, directed by Cui Yan, supervised by Wang Tiansheng, and written and produced by Shi Wei. Made entirely with AI imaging technology and running over two hours, it is presented by its producers as the first large-scale AI gospel biographical film in the Chinese-speaking world. It is adapted from Shi Wei's 430,000-character nonfiction biography "The Burnt Offering: The Life of John Sung," the product of years of research, and has toured Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan since September.
John Sung (1901-1944) was one of the most influential revival evangelists in the 20th-century Chinese church. Born in Putian, Fujian, he studied in the United States and earned a PhD in chemistry from Ohio State University; after a profound turn in faith, he gave up an academic career and returned to China to preach, traveling across China and Southeast Asia's Chinese communities for over a decade, holding large revival meetings in Taiwan in 1936 at invitation, before dying of illness in Beiping in 1944. The film traces his life from his student years and calling to his itinerant preaching.
