New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek named pop star Taylor Swift the team's “fakest celebrity fan” during an NBA 2K livestream on November 5, calling her courtside appearances “a little performative” — a remark that set off heated debate online, as GSM reported on November 6. On November 6, a Knicks spokesperson issued a statement publicly backing Swift.
In the statement to PEOPLE and ESPN, the spokesperson said: “Taylor Swift has been a Knicks fan for many years, has a long history with Madison Square Garden, and we are incredibly appreciative of her support of the organization.” Zach Harper of The Athletic also defended her publicly, saying he had watched Swift during this year's NBA Finals: “If she was faking it, that's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen in my life. She was into it.”
Swift's history at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, runs deeper than this year's title run. According to PEOPLE, she was photographed courtside as early as October 2014, watching the Knicks play the Chicago Bulls alongside Karlie Kloss; that November, she attended another game alongside Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long, among others. At 13, she sang in a Knicks halftime kids' talent contest at the Garden, and she has said that is when she became a Knicks fan. On June 10 this year, she sat courtside in a “Stevie Knicks” T-shirt at Game 4 of the NBA Finals, and the Knicks went on to win their first championship in 53 years. According to DAZN, as of November 7 Swift herself had not publicly responded to Kolek's remarks.
