Library of Congress Hosts a Giving Thanks Family Day on November 14, With Recipe Books and Harvest Traditions

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · History · GSM News

The Library of Congress will host its "Giving Thanks" Family Day on Saturday, November 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Jefferson Building. The program takes as its theme the harvest festivals celebrated in communities and cultures all over the world. Drop-in activities and collections displays are primarily designed for kids and families, though all are welcome; entry requires free tickets, and the Library advises registering in advance to guarantee a preferred time, with a limited number of tickets also released on the day.

Visitors can customize and decorate their own recipe notebook and collect historical recipes. A selection of cookbooks and recipes from the Library's collections, most of which are housed in the Science and Business Reading Room, will be on hand, with staff experts available to talk about the resources. Colleagues from the Asian Reading Room will share materials on fall harvest festivals including the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, Autumn Moon Viewing in Japan, Chuseok in Korea and Loi Krathong in Thailand, covering their customs, foods and activities.

Families who cannot attend can take part from home: the Library's Community Cookbook Collection digitizes charity and community cookbooks from 1862 to 1929, and its Free to Use and Reuse sets include copyright-free historical images on themes such as autumn and Thanksgiving in history. Visitors who need ADA accommodations are asked to contact the Library five days in advance. (Source: Library of Congress)
