British Soldier Who Ignored SIM-Card Order Was Hacked and Blackmailed: Court-Martialed, Sentenced to 10 Months' Detention

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World News · GSM News

London — A British Army soldier deployed to Estonia has been court-martialed after disobeying an order to remove the SIM card from his phone, which led to his phone being hacked and intimate photos being used to blackmail him, Ars Technica reported on November 7, citing Estonian media.

Corporal Daniel Barton-Kennedy, a soldier of seven years' service, was deployed about 90 miles west of the Russian border. Before deployment, troops were repeatedly told to lock down their personal devices and remove SIM cards for operational security; he did not comply. His phone was subsequently hacked, nude photos of him were stolen, and he was subjected to sextortion.

Barton-Kennedy pleaded guilty to disobeying a lawful command. He was reduced in rank and ordered to serve 10 months in service detention. The case highlights the operational-security risks of personal devices in forward deployments, where a compromised phone can expose both the individual and unit information. (Source: Ars Technica)
