Britain Preparing to Host Zelenskyy on a State Visit in 2027; Officials Say the Plan Is Not Yet Finalised

LONDON — Britain is preparing to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on an official state visit in 2027, the Financial Times reported on November 7. It would be his first state visit to Britain since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is intended as a mark of the British government's solidarity with the war-torn country. Next year the war will enter its fifth year.
Zelenskyy has visited Britain 13 times since the invasion and has had an audience with King Charles III, and he was given a high-profile welcome at Downing Street last month, but he has never made an official state visit. Government officials said the visit is expected to take place but has not yet been finalised, and its timing has not been decided. They considered it unlikely to coincide with the G20 summit in Manchester in November 2027, which Zelenskyy is also invited to attend.
A state visit is the highest form of ceremonial welcome Britain extends to a foreign head of state and usually involves a lavish banquet. The report said the format would likely be recast to be more appropriate to Zelenskyy's status as a wartime leader.
