BOSTON, Massachusetts — A new upscale dim sum restaurant, Zhu, has opened on Boston's Boylston Street, adding another choice to the city's Chinese dining scene. Located at 903 Boylston Street, the restaurant features Jiangnan- and Sichuan-style dim sum and Chinese classics; it began a soft opening on September 28, with the full menu to follow at the formal opening in the coming weeks. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

According to a review published November 5 in The Tech, MIT's student newspaper, the kitchen is led by chef Joanna Duan, whose inspiration comes from her mother's simple soup dumpling shop in China. The review said the restaurant's xiaolongbao reminded the diners of home, dishes such as the Sichuan spicy crispy chicken stood out, and the setting suits more formal occasions like company dinners. The restaurant sits conspicuously between what bills itself as the world's smallest Trader Joe's and a Boston bar.

Boston's Chinatown and surrounding Chinese restaurants have kept reinventing themselves in recent years, from traditional snacks to fine dim sum. Zhu's opening reflects Boston Chinese food's move from everyday fare toward refinement and variety, drawing local diners and students alike. The restaurant says it is still fine-tuning during the soft opening and welcomes feedback.
