County Council Member Jea Street Retires Abruptly After 22 Years; Special Election Expected Within About 45 Days

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Delaware — New Castle County Council Member Jea Street, representing District 10, retired abruptly on November 7 after 22 years in office. Council President Monique Williams-Johns announced the news that day at the Route 9 Library near New Castle, saying Street had advocated for education, community service and children for more than half a century and leaves a lasting political legacy. Street was first elected to the District 10 seat in 2004. He submitted his retirement letter the day before; media could not immediately reach him on the afternoon of November 7, and Williams-Johns did not give a reason for the sudden retirement. His departure triggers a special election: the county will start the replacement process, with a vote expected within about 45 days to fill the remainder of his term. It is New Castle County's second council special election in short order — District 11 Council Member David Tackett also left this month after being elected county register of deeds.
