Train Derails and Overturns in Egypt's Giza Governorate: Driver Killed, at Least 64 Injured

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · World · GSM News

CAIRO — A passenger train travelling from Cairo to Aswan in southern Egypt derailed near the village of Gerza in the Al-Ayyat district of Giza Governorate on November 8, with four carriages leaving the tracks and overturning. Xinhua, citing Egyptian media, reported that the train driver was killed and at least 64 people were injured.

Egypt's ambulance authority declared a state of emergency and sent multiple ambulances to take the injured to nearby hospitals. Egyptian local media later raised the injury count to more than 120, with one report putting it at 140; the toll was still being compiled, and the final figure will be the one announced by Egypt's health authorities.

The public prosecution has taken over the investigation into the technical and operational causes. Egyptian National Railways sent maintenance and technical teams to clear the wreckage and restore services, which were heavily disrupted on the Cairo-Aswan line.

Egypt's ageing railway system has long faced questions over equipment and management, and derailments and collisions have occurred repeatedly in recent years. The cause of this accident has not yet been announced.
