Woman Chained to Bed for Two Years, Beaten and Assaulted; Ex-Husband and Girlfriend Charged with Kidnapping

FARGO, North Dakota — A Fargo woman was chained to a bed by her ex-husband for two years, repeatedly beaten and sexually assaulted, until a maintenance worker heard her cries for help on Tuesday, November 3, and she was rescued. Responding to an apartment in Fargo, police found the victim's right ankle secured to the bed frame with a heavy chain and padlock, the bedroom windows covered in foil and a surveillance camera pointed at the bed. Through translation software, the victim told police her 40-year-old ex-husband, Arturo Calzada Becerra, brought her from Mexico to the United States in 2024 and kept her confined in the home, and that he and his 41-year-old girlfriend, Erendida Amorales, beat and sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors say the pair held the woman, a U.S. citizen, to exploit her identity in an immigration process. Calzada Becerra and Amorales were arrested and charged with kidnapping and assault, held in the Cass County Jail, and made their first court appearance on the morning of Friday, November 6. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, and the investigation continues.
