Fed Weekly Report: Reserve Balances Rise to $2.96 Trillion as Treasury General Account Falls to $936.2 Billion

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · Finance · GSM News

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve's H.4.1 statistical release, published November 5, shows that reserve balances held by depository institutions at Federal Reserve Banks stood at $2.9628 trillion on Wednesday, November 4. On a weekly-average basis, reserve balances were $2.9301 trillion, up $36.3 billion from the week ended October 28. The U.S. Treasury's General Account at the Fed held $936.2 billion on the same day, with its weekly average down $42.6 billion from the prior week.

The Treasury General Account is the federal government's main operating account at the central bank. When its balance falls, funds generally flow into the banking system and reserve balances rise; this week the two series moved in opposite directions by broadly corresponding amounts.

Securities held outright by the Federal Reserve totaled $6.4646 trillion on November 4, including $4.5788 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities and $1.8835 trillion in mortgage-backed securities. Currency in circulation was $2.4905 trillion, and reverse repurchase agreements stood at $334.5 billion.

The H.4.1 is the Federal Reserve's weekly balance-sheet release, published each Thursday, detailing the factors affecting reserve balances and the condition statement of the Federal Reserve Banks. It is a standard gauge of liquidity in the U.S. financial system. This release covers the week ended November 4, 2026.
