National Weather Service Issues High Surf Advisory for Northern California Coast: 22-to-24-Foot Breakers Sunday, Humboldt Bay Coastal Flooding Through Tuesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Eureka has issued a High Surf Advisory for the Northern California coast, in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. A large swell of 16 to 20 feet at 17 seconds arrives Sunday morning, producing breaking waves of 22 to 24 feet on west- to northwest-facing beaches, and forecasters urge the public to use extra caution near the surf zone.
Humboldt Bay also faces coastal flooding. Water levels inside the bay are running 1.2 to 1.3 feet above astronomical tides and could reach 8.8 to 9.0 feet on Sunday; minor to near-moderate coastal flooding is likely around Humboldt Bay from November 8 to 10. Outside the bay, tide gauges at Crescent City and Arena Cove are running 0.5 to 1.0 feet above astronomical tides, below flood advisory levels, though large breaking waves may briefly flood exposed roads and parking lots at high tide.
On the waters, a Hazardous Seas Watch and a Small Craft Advisory cover the Northwest California coastal waters through Sunday. On land, dry weather returns Sunday after lingering showers; another front on Monday afternoon brings close to an inch of rain to the Del Norte County mountains, and stronger storm systems with more rain are possible late in the week.
