Feral Chickens Overrun Honolulu; City Asks Residents and Visitors to Stop Feeding Them

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The City of Honolulu appealed on November 7 for residents and visitors to stop feeding the island's out-of-control feral chickens. The city's Department of Customer Services says the birds have become a scourge across Oahu: crowing through the night, tearing up yards and gardens, fouling walkways, damaging property and creating health hazards, while foraging through neighborhoods, pecking at garden plants and even harassing pets. The city has posted 'do not feed' signs in parks and on public transit, released an animated public-service spot and set traps in multiple locations, though some traps have been vandalized, blunting the effort. Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro said crews are trapping birds while running public education, but the city cannot solve the problem alone and needs the public's cooperation. Feral chickens have plagued Oahu residents for years; some have previously appealed to state lawmakers, and a 2022 funding bill in the legislature ultimately failed. Cockfighting in Hawaii, the report noted, is only a misdemeanor rather than a felony. The city warns that feeding only grows the flocks and asks everyone to help keep neighborhoods livable.
