Drone Attack Halts Production at Iraq's Khor Mor Gas Field, Cutting About 2,800 MW of Kurdistan Power Generation

BAGHDAD — Production at Iraq's Khor Mor gas field, one of the largest in the Kurdistan region, was halted on Sunday after a drone attack targeted the field, Reuters reported on November 8, citing two security sources. Smoke was seen rising from the field, and an engineer working there said a gas storage facility was hit and all crew were ordered into shelters for fear of further attacks.
The Kurdistan Regional Government's ministries of natural resources and electricity said in a joint statement that the field came under a "terrorist attack" at 11 p.m., when an explosive-laden drone struck it. The electricity ministry said the shutdown had cut gas supplies to the region's power stations and that generation capacity would fall by about 2,800 megawatts, roughly two thirds of the region's normal power supply. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered a joint investigation with the Kurdistan Region's authorities; an initial assessment reported no casualties, and no group has claimed responsibility.
The Khor Mor field, in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah province, is operated by Pearl Petroleum, a consortium of the UAE's Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum, and produces about 750 million cubic feet of natural gas a day, supplying much of the Kurdistan region's power generation. The field has been hit repeatedly by rocket and drone attacks: a drone strike in April 2024 killed four Yemeni workers, and an attack in November 2025 also forced production to stop.
