Amtrak Urges Early Thanksgiving Booking, Adding Cars and Extra Northeast Regional Trips November 20 to 30

Amtrak issued its Thanksgiving travel advisory on November 3, encouraging travelers to book early to secure the best fares and guaranteed seats. Thanksgiving is Amtrak's busiest travel season, and in 2025 the railroad broke ridership records during the holiday with more than 1.2 million customer trips, a nearly 6 percent increase from 2024. Amtrak predicts another year of record ridership this holiday season.
To accommodate the expected surge, Amtrak is adding cars to select Northeast Regional trains from November 20 to 30. Two additional Northeast Regional round trips will also run between Washington Union Station and New York Penn Station, serving cities in between, on November 24 to 25 and November 28 to 29. Interim President Byl Herrmann said the company is experiencing record demand and recommended that travelers plan their trips early.
On equipment, Amtrak says 15 NextGen Acela trains are now in service, more than ever before.
Tickets can be bought on Amtrak.com, through the Amtrak mobile app, at in-station ticketing kiosks and staffed stations, or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations across 46 states and parts of Canada, and the company notes that holiday tickets are selling quickly, so seats on peak dates should be confirmed as early as possible.
