Survey Names America's Most 'Entitled' Drivers: Five New York Cities in Top 20, New York City No. 2 Nationwide

NEW YORK — The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on November 7 that a survey of more than 3,000 drivers by the New Jersey law firm of Brett Rosen ranked the 20 U.S. cities with the most 'entitled' drivers, and five New York cities made the list. The survey defines entitled driving as ignoring traffic laws or other road users: long double-parking, passing on the shoulder, blocking bike lanes, illegal turns and cutting others off. New York City ranked first in the state and second nationwide, with crowded streets, double-parked cars, buses, bikes and pedestrians all cited as driver irritants. Rochester was second in the state and tenth nationally; the report pointed to stress from its I-490, I-390 and I-590 expressway network and an illegal-turn rate higher than most of the state. Yonkers was third in-state and 13th nationally, Syracuse fourth and 19th, and Buffalo fifth in-state, with narrow streets, hills, busy corridors and interstate and cross-border traffic cited. The survey also found 22% of drivers say the horn is their only outlet for frustration, 32% admit having used their vehicle to intimidate others or considering it, a quarter have been in a road-rage incident — 2% turning physical and 1% involving police — and 22% admit driving faster when in a hurry. After a crash, 61% say they stop and exchange insurance information, while 7% admit having left a scene.
