CASHION, Oklahoma — Community Christian School's football team beat No. 9 Cashion 10-7 on the night of November 6 at Maxson Field in Cashion, Kingfisher County, on Lucas Merlo's 22-yard field goal in the final moments, winning the school's first football district championship in its 40-year history. About 2,500 fans packed the field. Community Christian, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A-II, improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in district play, finishing the regular season unbeaten in the district after marching 75 yards in the closing moments for Merlo's winning kick. Cashion controlled the ball for much of the night and kept Community Christian's high-scoring offense on the sideline, but could not protect its lead. Community Christian has not belonged to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for long, making the title all the more remarkable. Cashion, 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the district for third place, travels to Marietta next week, while Community Christian hosts Dibble in the first round of the playoffs.
