OSAKA — A male clerk was stabbed at a large bookstore in Osaka on November 8, Kyodo News reported. The 23-year-old clerk at the MARUZEN & Junkudo bookstore in Chayamachi, Kita Ward, was stabbed in the left thigh from behind and was conscious when taken to hospital, with no threat to his life. Osaka prefectural police arrested a 33-year-old man at the scene.

Police said the injured clerk himself called emergency services at about 11:16 a.m. on November 8 to report that his thigh had been stabbed. He had been doing display work in front of the first-floor register when he was attacked from behind. Officers found the suspect, Satoru Okamoto, 33, an unemployed resident of Sumiyoshi Ward, sitting a few metres away and arrested him on suspicion of causing injury, seizing a kitchen knife nearby.

Okamoto and the clerk did not know each other, police said. He admitted the allegations and told investigators to the effect that he bore a grudge against society as a whole. Police are investigating his motive and the circumstances.

The bookstore stands in a busy district about 300 metres northeast of Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station, and the scene was briefly thrown into confusion after the attack.
