King Charles Leads Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph as About 10,000 Veterans March Past

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · World · GSM News

LONDON — Britain held its national Remembrance Sunday service on November 8 at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, central London. At 11 a.m. the nation observed a two-minute silence, and King Charles III laid the first wreath, followed by the Prince of Wales, in honour of service personnel and civilians who have died in conflicts since the First World War.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham attended the service for the first time in office and laid a wreath. Standing near the Cenotaph were nine former prime ministers — John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer — a record number for the ceremony. Party leaders including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also laid wreaths, with Farage doing so for the first time as a major party leader.

After the service, about 10,000 veterans took part in the Royal British Legion's march-past, representing more than 300 armed forces and civilian organisations. They included about a dozen veterans of the Second World War, the oldest of them 105; around 20 Second World War veterans had marched the previous year. The Royal British Legion this year also marked the 35th anniversary of the end of the 1990-91 Gulf War.

Remembrance Sunday falls on the Sunday closest to November 11. November 11 is Armistice Day: at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the armistice between Germany and the Allies took effect, ending the fighting on the Western Front in the First World War. A further two-minute silence will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11.
