SOUTH DAKOTA — The South Dakota Senate Republican caucus reshuffled its leadership on November 6, setting the team for the 2027 legislative session. Senator Casey Crabtree of Madison was elected majority leader, Tim Reed of Brookings was nominated as president pro tempore, and Amber Hulse of Hot Springs became assistant majority leader. The caucus also chose four majority whips: Randy Deibert of Spearfish, Helene Duhamel of Rapid City, Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre and Stephanie Sauder of Bryant. On the Democratic side, Liz Larson remains minority leader with Erik Muckey as assistant minority leader. The reshuffle follows the midterm elections, in which Republicans picked up another legislative district. Senate Republicans say the new leadership will lead the caucus into the 38-day annual session opening January 12, handling the budget, education and local affairs. Observers note the changes continue the tug-of-war between factions within the state GOP: Crabtree returns as majority leader while former leader Karr exits the leadership team.
