Santa Ana Winds Bring Heat and Fire Danger; Woman Arrested for Allegedly Starting a Brush Fire in Angeles National Forest

LOS ANGELES — A weak Santa Ana wind event is bringing unseasonable heat and elevated fire danger to Southern California this weekend. The National Weather Service expects Los Angeles County highs in the mid-80s to around 90 on Sunday, with northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, gusts to 45 mph and isolated mountain gusts of 45 to 55 mph, and relative humidity falling to between 8 and 20 percent. The Los Angeles Fire Department's red-flag parking restrictions, in effect since 6 a.m. Saturday in very high fire-hazard severity zones, were lifted at 6 a.m. Sunday. A beach hazards statement remains in effect for Los Angeles County beaches through Tuesday morning, and a coastal flood advisory runs through noon Tuesday for Orange County coastal areas.
Amid the fire danger, a 47-year-old Los Angeles woman, Sheila Nartatez, was arrested for allegedly starting a brush fire in the Angeles National Forest. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said U.S. Forest Service firefighters saw Nartatez walking near a small brush fire on Little Tujunga Canyon Road near mile marker 16 at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which burned about half an acre. Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Station detained her; she is being held at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood in lieu of $35,000 bail.
"Starting a fire recklessly is inherently dangerous, especially during red-flag warnings for high-wind events," the sheriff's department said. "Strong winds can carry burning embers over long distances, igniting multiple fires and transforming a small fire into an uncontrollable wildfire." Captain Ryan A. Vienna said the station deploys additional units for fire watch during red-flag events. No motive has been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
