BURLINGTON, Vermont — Burlington will hold a road victims memorial at 3 p.m. on November 13 at 645 Pine Street, honoring seven people killed on Vermont roads in the past year, including 16-year-old Shiloh Skalka. Skalka was struck and killed by a pickup truck on July 16 while crossing on an e-bike at the intersection of Pine and Locust streets; her father, Christian Skalka, will speak at the memorial. The event is organized by Local Motion, a walking and cycling advocacy group, just ahead of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed on the third Sunday of November each year. Organizers will display white-painted shoes and bicycles, name plaques and candles. The group counts 7 deaths and 139 injuries on Vermont roads since November 1 of last year. State data show 11 fatal pedestrian crashes and 1 fatal cyclist crash statewide in 2025, compared with 6 pedestrian and 2 cyclist deaths in 2024. Four pedestrians have died so far this year, including Todd Ward, 54, struck and killed on Shelburne Road in South Burlington on September 15.
