'Godzilla Minus Zero' Opens to $14.7 Million in North America, Eyes Record $31 Million Weekend

LOS ANGELES — Toho and GKIDS' 'Godzilla Minus Zero' took in $14.7 million at the North American box office on its opening day, Friday, November 6, including Thursday previews — a single-day haul already above the $11.4 million that its predecessor, 'Godzilla Minus One', earned across its entire opening weekend in 2023. Industry estimates put the sequel at about $31 million for the weekend, which would set a North American opening record for a live-action foreign-language film, breaking the $17.8 million mark held by Zhang Yimou's 'Hero' since 2002.
Playing in 3,254 theaters, the film earned an A CinemaScore, matching its predecessor. A No. 1 finish would make it only the fourth non-English-language film ever to top the North American box office, after 'The Passion of the Christ', 'Hero' and 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle'. Warner Bros.' animated 'The Cat in the Hat' opened the same weekend with $6 million on Friday and an estimated $18 million for the weekend. Final weekend figures will be released on Sunday.
