Grand Jury Indicts Suspect in Diamond Head Kidnapping Case

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Diamond Head kidnapping case took a new step on October 30, when the Honolulu prosecutor announced that an Oahu grand jury has indicted 23-year-old Diesel Kawelo on a felony kidnapping charge and a misdemeanor harassment charge, Hawaii News Now reported.
The case stems from an incident at midday on October 26 in the parking garage of the Kainalu apartments near Coconut Avenue in the Diamond Head area. Surveillance video showed a man approaching two women, aged 24 and 77, and attempting to drag the younger woman toward a truck before neighbors intervened. Police said the suspect was arrested at about 2:39 p.m. on October 26 near 22nd Avenue and Diamond Head Road, and first appeared in court on October 29.
Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said his office is committed to public safety and accountability. Under Hawaii law, kidnapping is a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Kawelo is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center without bail.
The indictment concerns this single alleged attack. The charges remain allegations until proven in court, and the defendant is presumed innocent. Public reporting has not substantiated any list of additional victims or an organized trafficking network.
