MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Penn State's men's hockey team beat No. 18 Minnesota in a shootout on October 30 in the Big Ten opener at 3M Arena at Mariucci, the university reported.

The teams were tied 1-1 through regulation and overtime before Dane Dowiak scored the deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout. Goaltender Josh Fleming made 35 saves and stopped four of five shootout attempts, the decisive performance of the night. Minnesota outshot Penn State 36-29 and 5-0 in overtime, but Fleming held firm.

The win moves Penn State to 2-4-1 and extends its unbeaten run to three games; Minnesota falls to 2-3-2. It was Penn State's second Big Ten opener to reach a shootout and its first win in one, after losing the 2023-24 opener shootout to Notre Dame. The teams meet again at 6 p.m. on October 31 at the same arena to finish the weekend series.
