Astros Hire Cardinals Executive Randy Flores as General Manager

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros announced on October 30 that they have hired St. Louis Cardinals executive Randy Flores as the club's new general manager, Reuters reported.
Flores, 51, spent the past 11 seasons in the Cardinals' front office, becoming scouting director in 2015 and an assistant general manager after the 2018 season. He succeeds Dana Brown, who departed on August 24 after serving as Houston's general manager since January 2023.
Astros owner Jim Crane said in a statement that Flores made a major impact over the past 10 seasons in St. Louis and that the club was impressed by his scouting and player-acquisition background, welcoming him and his family to Houston. Flores said he is excited and grateful for the opportunity, citing the Astros' winning tradition under Crane, and that his family is eager to settle in Houston.
As a player, Flores was a left-handed reliever whose eight-year major league career took him to the Rangers, Rockies, Cardinals and Twins, with an 11-5 record and 4.61 ERA in 350 appearances. The Astros have reached the playoffs in nine of the past 10 seasons with eight division titles, but finished 81-81 this year and were swept by the White Sox in the wild-card round. One of Flores's first tasks is hiring a new manager, after Joe Espada departed on October 14.
