UCLA-Led Study: Stars Colliding and Merging in the Early Universe May Explain How the First 'Monster' Black Holes Formed

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) featured a new UCLA-led study on October 26 proposing that stars colliding and merging in the universe's infancy may explain how the universe's first "monster" black holes formed, offering a new answer to a long-standing mystery.

How supermassive black holes could appear so early in cosmic history has long puzzled astronomers. The study suggests that in the universe's earliest phase, stars crashing into and merging with one another could have built up the mass that seeded these giant black holes.

The study was presented by UCLA Media Relations in the October 26 edition of UCLA Daily Highlights, which also carried a California voter guide for Election Day and an item on CRISPR gene-editing research.
