Follow-Up: Justice Department to Send Election Monitors to Polling Places in Seven Michigan Cities, Including Detroit

DETROIT, Michigan — The U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division has sent notices to seven Michigan municipalities that DOJ election monitors will be present at their polling places on Election Day, state officials confirmed on October 22. The letters went to Detroit, East Lansing, Flint, Grand Rapids, Hamtramck, Lansing and Warren.
It is the first time in several election cycles that DOJ monitors — composed mostly of federal attorneys and Justice Department staff — will be present in Michigan. In about two weeks, Michigan voters will pick a new governor and a new U.S. senator in the midterm election.
Michigan Attorney General Nessel said the law provides specific parameters for monitors, observers and challengers to witness elections at local polling places, and that DOJ monitors may not speak with voters, touch election equipment or ballots, or interfere. She said monitors are a standard part of the election process and are expected to comply with state and federal law as they did in this year's August primary, but that her office stands ready to hold accountable anyone who attempts to unlawfully interfere with or intimidate voters or election workers. The Justice Department previously sent poll monitors to Detroit, Lansing and East Lansing for the August 4 primary. (GSM, based on Detroit Free Press reporting)
