U.S. Says 97% of Ships Still Transiting Strait of Hormuz Safely; UKMTO Counts 135 Incidents Since Conflict Began

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

U.S. officials say that despite Iranian attacks, 97 percent of vessels have so far crossed the Strait of Hormuz safely, and that the United States has assisted Gulf partners in shipping more than 100 million barrels of crude oil out of the region in recent weeks — and more than 1.3 billion barrels over recent months, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. In its weekly review, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) counted 135 incidents in the strait since the conflict began.

On the Iranian side, Al Jazeera reported that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy commander Ali Azmaei warned this week that any vessel switching off its navigation systems in the strait would be treated as "hostile." GSM reported on October 17 that the Revolutionary Guards said two tankers had struck naval mines and caught fire in the strait, with the second losing power; as of October 18 that claim remained unconfirmed by independent sources, and the names of the two tankers had not been released.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global oil shipments. Attacks and blockade threats around the strait have continued for weeks, and Washington's and Tehran's public accounts of shipping conditions there differ markedly. (GSM, following The Hindu BusinessLine and Al Jazeera)
