Trump Says He Will Invite Zelenskyy to December G20 Summit in Florida Gaggle at Mar-a-Lago Halloween Party
On the evening of October 31, President Donald Trump took questions from reporters for about 11 minutes during the annual Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. The White House official channel later published the full video of the gaggle. During the exchange, Trump said he will invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to attend the Group of 20 leaders' summit in Florida in December.
Earlier that day in Atlanta, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting whether Zelenskyy could attend. According to Reuters, Rubio said the decision was up to President Trump, that he would not rule out an invitation if Zelenskyy's attendance could produce something positive, and that he had no announcement that day. According to IANS, Trump gave a clearer answer that evening, saying he will invite Zelenskyy to the summit. The arrangements and the form of any Ukrainian participation have not been announced. The foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta was part of the preparations for the December leaders' summit in Doral, Florida.
The gaggle also touched on the November 3 midterm elections, a U.S. warning to Russia of a possible terrorist attack, and Iran. Asked whether the United States would go back to war with Iran, Trump declined to say, asking the reporter in return whether he would disclose such a plan if he had one.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump told reporters the party guests were wealthy members of the club, including major Wall Street figures who had spent all day preparing their costumes, and joked that he had taken only 10 minutes and put on a red tie. The party had a jungle theme, with many guests in animal costumes. He also criticized former adviser Alina Mildon over a reported $50 million, four-year deal with the family of a Venezuelan billionaire, a member of which received a presidential pardon weeks earlier, saying he did not want her paid and calling the arrangement outrageous. Mildon went by the name Alina Habba when she worked for Trump.
Before the party, Trump had held virtual rallies during the day for Republican allies ahead of the midterm elections. The White House held its own Halloween celebration on October 29 on the South Lawn, where Trump and First Lady Melania Trump handed commemorative candy to hundreds of children.
