Death Valley's Scotty's Castle Offers Exterior Tours Again After an 11-Year Closure

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · Culture & Tourism · GSM News

The National Park Service began offering guided exterior tours of Scotty's Castle in Death Valley National Park on October 10, running on most Saturdays and Sundays through April 17, 2027. The tours are led by rangers and by guides from the Death Valley Natural History Association, which handles tickets. They cover the grounds and the building exteriors and explain the restoration work under way.

Scotty's Castle is a Spanish Revival estate built in the 1920s by Chicago businessman Albert Johnson as a winter retreat for himself and his wife, Bessie. A flash flood in October 2015 damaged the estate's buildings, roads, utilities and historic landscape, and the castle has been closed ever since.

The next construction phase begins in 2027, covering the parking lot, the historic Longshed and the Gas Tank House. After that work, curatorial staff will return the historic furnishings and collections so that interior tours can resume; on the current timeline, the earliest anticipated full reopening is November 2028.
